Look Here!: Art, Artists, Etc.

Keeping art on the cheap for the holidays

Paul Lewis' "biggie Smalls" is currently on display at Club Clau.

Staying on cue with delivery of non-traditional arts picks, this week we make 10 holiday suggestions that include art AND art objects.

1. If you've never meandered through INTUITIVE (913 Vine St., Downtown), do it now. You won't be disappointed, we promise. Showcasing a wide variety of quirky and cool objects, this store is a hidden treasure chest for meaningful, fun gifts. You'll find stimulating candles, handmade jewelry and handbags, the perfect card and even inspiring journals. Prices are affordable, so don't miss out.

2. The first Saturday every month, Art Aches takes over PLUSH, above Carol's (825 Main St., Downtown). In December, the show features ABBIE HITCHCOCK's stained glass, AMANDA CARLISLE's holiday cards and COREY JEFFERSON's pottery and more. Head down for art, music and drinks where you're guaranteed an inexpensive solution to gift despair: Works start around $30. 7 p.m.-midnight Dec. 6.

3. At AESTHETICA (16 E. 12th St., Over-the-Rhine), a home furnishings and design shop, you'll find unlimited possibilities. Browse through specialty candles and decorative paper, Romanian stemware, silk Chinese takeout-style purses and fortune cookie coin purses. Prices are reasonable and they offer holiday packages with a variety of funky items. Save 15 percent during their holiday sale, Get Some Glitz, Dec. 5-7.

4. MODOLOGY (3174 Madison Road, Oakley) embraces the mantra, "modern + art = lifestyle." This new design studio features vintage pieces showcasing the designs of CHARLES EAMES and GEORGE NELSON as well as the "progressive" creations of proprietors/ designers ANDREW CAPE and KEITH CHRAPLIWY. Along with fellow partner, STEVE PASZT, Modology was founded to pay homage to "innovative spirit and functional beauty of modern furniture." Currently exhibiting is artist SUZANNE LAMBERT. The color, sophistication and level of refinement in her work resonates with the idea that modern plus art does truly equal lifestyle.

5. Venture down to LIFEESTHETICS (13th and Clay streets, Over-the-Rhine) and scope out funky, beaded holiday trees, African ornaments and more. Currently showcased are The Douglas Smith Portrait Reprise, silver rings from the High Southwest and new bedding from old sweaters by Crispina. There are plenty of design elements and accessories to accommodate everyone's wallet.

6. Avoid the crush at typical mall stores and strike out into parts unknown! Visit A SHOW OF HANDS (7875 Montgomery Road, Kenwood Towne Centre), tucked into its own corner of the world. We dare you not to find the perfect gift for almost anyone. This store offers hand-blown glass, unique jewelry, pottery, wind chimes and more. It won't break your bank either. Do some exploring soon.

7. What better way to start the year's most intense shopping season than with the local bazaar at ISI/HERMAN MILLER GALLERY (222 E. 14th St., Over-the-Rhine). The Holiday Bazaar sale offers original artwork, such as jewelry, photography, picture frames, mobiles, sculpture, clocks, coasters and vases by local artists. Items won't break the bank. 6-10 p.m. Final Friday, Nov. 28.

8. STUDIO METROPOLITAN/CAFECITO (1335 Main St., Over-the-Rhine) is a perfect place to stop, grab a latté and bask in the array of mementos guaranteed to pull at the heartstrings. On view and modestly priced are encaustics by ELIZABETH NEAL and paintings by MICHAEL BURNS. Neal and Burns both deliver a sense of tranquility. Check out this little dive for no other reason than to say, "Wow, I remember that!"

9. At URBAN EDEN (1313 Main St., Over-the-Rhine) it's not just about the garden. Here you'll find anything from vibrantly colored satchels to exquisite planting pots. Packed with variety from floor to ceiling, try not to miss the great art sprinkled throughout the store.

10. Been to CLUB CLAU (221 E. 12th St., Over-the-Rhine) yet? Even if you don't dance, go for the art. That's right. This club has art rather than traditional bar paraphernalia adorning its walls. Currently Clau features work by RICHARD EYMAN, CHRIST GLIEBE, R.KUSZYK, PAUL LEWIS and ANDREW VANSICKLE, which include graffiti art and Pop icon portraits. Pocket some of the smaller pieces for as little as $30. Check it out 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
