Media Bridges hits the great outdoors
 |
David Hugg's sculpture is part of the two MASSIVE
exhibitions at SSNOVA.
|
Open your eyes to art hiding in unlikely places this week, and you won't be disappointed: we promise. ... It doesn't sound like anything we've ever seen, and we bet you haven't either. MEDIA BRIDGES (1100 Race St., Over-the-Rhine) will dazzle with a special outdoor media exhibition, Autumedia, converting an ordinary parking lot and surrounding walls into gallery space. Some projected pieces will use the walls as their canvas, while other three-dimensional installations will use alternative projection surfaces. The event will feature pieces by an array of artists/producers, including TESS CORTES and CYNTHIA LATHAM. Cortes' installation is "an interactive projected billboard that lets the user create his or her own 'ad,' based on given images I provide." You can make your own ad, and, it's free: so there's no reason why can't go. Saturday, 6-10 p.m. ...
Friday, be sure to drop by SSNOVA (2260 Central Pkwy., Brighton) and catch MASSIVE: presence, and MASSIVE: active the second and third installments in the series (see Larger Than Life). ANDREA SPARKS, CATHERINE DUNN, DAN BAUM, MITCHELL SIPUS and other artists will exhibit their sculptural interpretation of the human body: its form, its essence, its function and its potential. "In the search for inspiration in the human body, these artists are focusing on the limitless intricacies of existence..." Given the reputation SSNOVA has established with past exhibits, it's bound to interest your presence. Opening reception 7-11 p.m. Friday. ...
We know you've done it, too -- walked right by A SHOW OF HANDS (Kenwood Towne Centre) without peeking inside. But a quick peek will leave you wanting more, at least in our opinion. After walking in for A Show of Our Hands, the shop's exhibit featuring work by its own talented staff, we'll be back soon! In addition to its ongoing showcase of regional artists' wares, this exceptional gift store/gallery features art in all forms by artists HEATHER BOLLEN, DIANE CHRISTIAN BUDD, EVA CLARKE, MARI MILLER, JENN SCZUR, AMY WALLACE, SARAH WILISCH and HEATHER ZIMMERMANN. They offer art in all mediums, including clocks made of saucers (no, that's not a typo), photography, sculpture and even handmade scarves. Some of our favorites include a clock assembled from bicycle gears, a quilted coffee table cover and pillows made from silk ties. Talent abounds here, from the other side of the counter. Don't walk by next time. On view through Oct. 31. ...
Talk about heavy: YORK STREET CAFE (738 York St., Newport) features Load-Bearing Posters, by HOLLAND DAVIDSON. "She has a great sense of humor, hence the name of the show," says York Street proprietor Betsy Cunningham. Each piece delivers an intense array of symbols and colors. Davidson addresses media issues with large, rhythmic, abstract paintings. Within each piece lurks a hidden story mixed with bizarre imagery and patterns; the details of each piece are left for the viewer to determine. Each element, from color to imagery is very intentional, and clearly defines the identity of her show. Take your time digesting each piece, through Oct. 19; and while you're there, head downstairs to the café for a bite.
Mini Reviews
CAROL'S ON MAIN (825 Main St., Downtown) features oils and acrylics on canvas, right over your lunch table, no doubt. BETHANY CASEY and TIPPY McINTOSH have created flower shadowboxes and landscapes, respectively, guaranteed to brighten your dining experience. The landscapes are wistful and dreamy, while the confidence evident in Casey's bold color strokes has a simplicity that's appealing. Through Oct. 31. (JULIE BERNZOTT) Grade: C
THE CHIDLAW GALLERY AT THE ART ACADEMY OF CINCINNATI hosts new work by faculty through Oct. 19. Don't miss Ken Henson's colorful "Waiting for a Miracle," Laura Hollis' self-portrait "The Good Patriot, One" or Christy Carr's precarious sculpture of suspended water balloons, "fe/male." Question: Why was Kirk Mayhew's ho-hum "Fingerhut" included in a show of new work? I've seen this finger-pressing-a-house-into-a-corner sculpture in three shows in more than a year. (STACEY RECHT) Grade: B
