Tristate dance companies come together right now for a season preview
It's not often that the population of Cincinnati's various and vibrant performing dance community comes together in one spot. But that's what's happening on Thursday evening at the Cincinnati Ballet Center studios at 1555 Central Pkwy., Over-the-Rhine, when we get a glimpse of EVERYTHING THAT MOVES.
The Cincinnati Ballet and the Cincinnati Arts Association have gathered ballet tech ohio performing arts association, Cincinnati Ballet artists, Contemporary Dance Theater (CDT), McGing Irish Dance, the Otto M. Budig Academy of Cincinnati Ballet, the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Yalla Raqs and Arthur Murray Dance studios for a collaborative sampler event to showcase the Tristate's 2003-04 season.
The Cincinnati Ballet is in its 41st season this year. Under Artistic Director Victoria Morgan it's a safe bet we'll see an excerpt from the dazzling, three-part Balanchine work, Jewels, the season opener.
CDT, under Jefferson James, has brought renowned modern dance to Cincinnati for 30 years. CDT also highlights local choreographers each season in a "Choreographers Without Companies" concert. Expect to see some of our amazing local talent on display.
Of note this season, in innovative collaborations, the Cincinnati Ballet and ballet tech ohio both will bring well-known modern dance artists to town as an integral part of their regular series. In November, the Ballet presents the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Constance Dinapoli, a former Paul Taylor dancer, now an adjunct faculty member at the UC's College-Conservatory of Music, will provide a lecture/demonstration on Taylor technique for guests on Thursday.
Artistic Director Claudia Rudolf Barrett's ballet tech ohio provides young dancers the opportunity to work and perform with professionals, and we'll see samples of their work. But, having already established a popular annual Gala of International Ballet Stars, ballet tech ohio has expanded its vision further by scheduling New York City's Complexions, headed by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson (a favorite guest solo performer here in recent years), for a February visit.
The Ballet's executive director, Alan Hills is upbeat about the event. It's a tribute to a strong community -- "one that can only get stronger if we work together," he says.
Everything That Moves is free and open to the public. Ticket info: 513-562-1114
