The Road to Wellness
Finding Your True Nature

By Janet Berg

Upon arrival at class, I'm greeted with meditative Indian music, a peaceful atmosphere and a warm welcome. I'm in Nancy Willman's world for the next hour. Along with her successful Willman Design business -- graphic designs for corporate communications -- she's passionate about yoga and sharing it with others.

Nancy teaches Hatha Yoga, a combination of asana poses and Sivananda breathing techniques. She's made this her own daily practice for 20 years, and it shows in her being as she radiates a peaceful calmness, confidence and loving kindness.

No matter how long you've been doing yoga -- a day, a week, a lifetime -- she says it helps you to discover your true nature. Nancy defines this as that peaceful core within you behind all of the "buzz." It's our responsibility to find this, and the practice of yoga also reaps the added benefits of increased flexibility through stretching and breathing techniques, mindfulness, release of bodily stress and tension and ability to make clear decisions.

As class begins, we lie on our mats in "corpse" position (on our backs with palms open to the sky, eyes closed). Nancy comes around to each of us, shaking her special chimes over the length of our bodies and around our heads. I always look forward to this magical beginning to my session, as it somehow signals my mind and body to relax, center and let go of the restless chatter. The gentle poses that ensue -- Nancy is adamant about not doing anything that's painful -- combined with mindful breathing techniques create a bridge and balance between mind and body.

Nancy teaches at her home in the woods every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (Yoga on Sunday, light brunch included) or will come to your home or business (Yoga @ Home, minimum five people) for a four-week session. Contact her at 513-561-2502 or willman@fuse.net for more info.
