Here are a few programs to look out for in the upcoming week ...
THURSDAY 8 P.M. BET Awards, BET. The network's third annual award ceremony, hosted by Mo'Nique, recognizes excellence in music, sports and acting. It's the first award ceremony out of the gate for the season ... or the last of this past season, depending on how you look at it.
THURSDAY 8 P.M. M*A*S*H, FX. "Good-Bye, Farewell and Amen." Though you've seen the show in re-runs for years, you don't often get to see the two-and-a-half hour finale from 1983. It still stands as one of the highest-rated TV programs of all time. One of the better endings to a series, too, though Col. Flagg is sadly absent from the proceedings.
THURSDAY 8 P.M. Biography, A&E. "Geraldo Rivera." A night of tough choices, but this one repeats at 11 p.m. You either love him or hate him. Here's the career of the crusading journalist, sleazy talk-show host and self-described ladies' man, who forged a comeback to legitimate journalism -- well, Fox News anyway. Features interviews with "Cheech" Marin, Hugh Downs and Geraldo's mum, Lillian, and his sister, Sharon. Oddly, Geraldo won't tell us where any of these people are located.
FRIDAY 9 A.M. The Greensboro Massacre, The History Channel. In 1979, in Greensboro, N.C., while TV news cameras captured members of the Communist Worker's Party preparing for a "Death to the Klan" rally, a caravan of Klansmen and American Nazis drove into the center of the protestors. Insults escalated into physical confrontation, and the Klansmen and Nazis fired into the crowd, killing five and wounding 11. Even more shocking: An all-white jury looked past the videotape evidence and found the shooters not guilty. Shameful. A BBC documentary about this tragedy inspired the OMD song, "88 Seconds in Greensboro."
FRIDAY 9 P.M. Donny Osmond's Historic Places, Travel Channel. From Plymouth Rock to Gettysburg, Ellis Island, Pearl Harbor and the Hoover Dam, Donny Osmond guides a tour of the pivotal places in the shaping of the United States. Each location features a compelling story of the spirit of America. Beavis & Butthead thought Donny was a moron. That's a bit strong.
SATURDAY 4 P.M. Microbe Invasion, TLC. This program is a personal introduction to the hidden, varied and ever-changing populations of microbes you carry with you everywhere, no matter where you go. Explore the vibrant, unseen microbes that make up nine-tenths of who we are ... and see if you don't feel itchy.
NEWS & NOTES: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was a big winner on July 20, when it scooped up two Television Critics of America awards. The program won for Outstanding Achievement In Comedy and Outstanding Individual Achievement In Comedy. Even though Groove Tube is banned from TCA membership, I agree with their decision. After all, Stewart is our guy (see "Your Daily Dose," issue of Oct. 17-23, 2002). ... After clearing up that ugly lawsuit with Spike Lee, The New TNN will become Spike TV on Aug. 11.
