The Medicine Wheel

The medicine wheel is the wheel of life, neverending. Different forms of the medicine wheel exist all over the world, from the great stone circles of Europe to the mandalas of India. Native Americans use medicine wheels as ceremonial centers of culture, astronomical laboratories and places to mark the times and changes in their lives.
The journey around the wheel introduces us to the sacred concepts of the Native Americans. It's our journey throughout life -- through the seasons, directing us in our cycle of growth and development. Travelling through the wheel can be likened to taking a seed and developing its potential to be a flower. Our potential (the seed) can be nurtured into a bloom that reseeds itself for another journey around the wheel.
On this journey, we learn that we need to honor where we are right now and the lessons we're learning at this time in our lives. Our relationship to all of the elements of nature and each other are in perfect balance.
Sophia Paparodis, M.Ed., has created a workshop to teach the concepts and symbols of the medicine wheel and also help you create your own personal medicine wheel to keep for future reflection. There are four sessions at 10 a.m.-1 p.m. the last Saturday of each month beginning May 31 (also June 28, July 26 and Aug. 30) at the Center for the Soul, 2905 Minot Ave., Oakley.
