Ballet Tech's calling all cars for an arresting performance of Coppelia

BY KATHY VALIN Linking? Click Here!

BALLET TECH OHIO PERFORMING ARTS ASSOCIATION (BTOPAA), directed by Claudia Rudolf Barrett, presents COPPÉLIA at the Jarson-Kaplan Theater this weekend. The classic comedic ballet mixes story and dance in a frothy tale of misidentification with dark undertones. Swanilda loves Franz. Franz, ever the sucker, falls for a mechanical doll (Coppélia) created by a magical toymaker, Dr. Coppélius. Eventually, through a series of comic and sinister mishaps, the old man is convinced his beloved doll has come to life. Sadly, it's a prank pulled by the two young lovers, who run away laughing as he collapses in grief. In the last act, Coppélius is placated, Swanilda and Franz are betrothed and the village celebrates with (of course) more dancing. Choreography from FREDERIC FRANKLIN, honored last season in Cincinnati Ballet's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Festival, is re-staged by Richmond Ballet Associate Artistic Director Malcolm Burn in collaboration with Barrett. The pre-professional dancers of BTOPAA are joined by SARAH HAIRSTON and ANDREY KASATSKY of Cincinnati Ballet, portraying Swanilda and Franz. Among other recent roles, Hairston pleased crowds as the girl with "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" in Graceland and as Tatania in Midsummer Night's Dream. Kasatsky, who appears regularly with BTOPAA, was recently coached by Franklin for his Cincinnati Ballet re-creation of Devil's Holiday, which he danced in during the 1940s. ...

Also from Cincinnati Ballet, MICHAEL WARDLAW (Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream) and Richmond Ballet's PHILLIP SKAGGS complete the professional cast. Tickets: 513-241-7469 ...
