Here are a few programs to look out for in the upcoming week ...
WEDNESDAY 8 P.M. Biography, A&E. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Writer Joss Whedon's story of a high-school cheerleader who battles the undead suffers a lackluster debut as a movie but resurfaces as a hit TV series. Includes interviews with Whedon and star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who came to the show as a 17-year-old soap-opera actress. For more on the series finale read on...
THURSDAY 10 P.M. Beyond the Bermuda Triangle: The Devil's Sea, TLC. Discover why the Devil's Sea off the southern coast of Japan is so extraordinarily deadly. Could this stretch of water be the Bermuda Triangle of the Pacific? The Bermuda Triangle's PR people are taking countermeasures.
THURSDAY 10 P.M. Vesuvius, Discovery. In 79 A.D., multiple eruptions of Mount Vesuvius buried the Roman city of Pompeii. Citizens of neighboring Herculaneum also met an untimely demise. The volcanic blast killed its victims instantly. Fine powder in the burning cloud penetrated the bodies as they dehydrated, capturing them in their original positions. This program follows modern archaeologists as they look to these bodies frozen in history for clues of their last days. Creepy but interesting.
FRIDAY 10 P.M. Inside the Mall of America, Travel Channel. Travel to Minnesota for a behind-the-scenes peek at the largest shopping opp in the U.S. The mega-mall boasts 520 shops and restaurants, an indoor theme park and a world-class aquarium. It attracts over 43 million visitors every year.
SUNDAY 2 P.M. Secret Passages, The History Channel. "Underground Gardens." In 1907, Sicilian immigrant Baldasare Forestiere moved to California to escape racism and the frightening echoes of tyranny in his homeland. Applying his knowledge of subway construction, he began to build a four-bedroom underground Shangri-La where he could feel safe. For 40 years, he designed grottos and groves, patios and passageways over seven acres of land -- a stunningly original underground labyrinth of architectural and artistic genius. Maybe if he'd moved here, we'd have a subway.
MONDAY 11 P.M. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart: Correspondent Special, Comedy Central. An insightful half-hour retrospective on some of the most important field pieces and investigative reports to come out of any fake news show this year, or at least for the past few months.
TUESDAY 8 P.M. Buffy The Vampire Slayer, WBQC-TV 25. Bye-bye, Buff. Sarah Michelle Gellar heads for the greener pastures of the cineplex, as the curtain comes down on her cult show. Let's hope things work out better than they did for the first Buffy -- the very pretty but self-important Kristy Swanson, who ended up nude in Playboy. Then again, maybe we shouldn't wish Gellar well.
NEWS & NOTES: The Steve Harvey Show comes to DVD on June 24. ... FX has abandoned its Candidate program idea for next year. The idea was to follow candidates, documentary-style, through the 2004 presidential campaign.
