Bob Jakubovic preaches humor in his debut novel
Local author BOB JAKUBOVIC has organized a WHOLE NEW RELIGION in hopes of getting readers to fill his pews. The novel, Jakubovic's first, has a literary deity in notoriously reclusive writer Felix Sladkey. After making his fans wait for nine years, Sladkey sends in the finale to his latest opus, an already-predicted blockbuster. Yet Aaron, the typist ultimately in charge of compiling Sladkey's tome, opts to put his own touch on the work by finishing it himself. And naturally Sladkey won't risk seclusion in favor of protesting. Or will he? Jakubovic, who not surprisingly cites real-life reclusive author Don DeLillo as an influence, discusses his wry tale of deceits at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers. 513-396-8960. ...
Poet MARGO STEVER slides into town with FROZEN SPRING, her first full-length collection. But despite her book's title, Stever doesn't craft verses on the delicate beauty of nature. Fragility does root itself in the poet's work as Stever rakes together words that unnaturally explore alcoholism, the loss of creativity and the death of a parent. Sunny-day reading this isn't, but it's well worth the hike. During Stever's 7 p.m. appearance at Joseph-Beth, she'll be joined by local poet Virginia Slachman, who mines gold from her own Heidegger's Temple. 513-396-8960. ...
With the sun shining, it's a good time to reach for MOON HANDBOOKS OHIO. This edition of the compact guide by DAVID K. WRIGHT is just the right size to navigate a little weekend road trip. It's selective rather than comprehensive, offering the author's pick of notable sights, museums, neighborhoods and suburbs, recreation, culture and entertainment, accommodations and food. In addition, Wright gives a history of the cities and counties explored and gives notes on transportation, information, services and media. Though I don't agree with all of Wright's picks and comments for the Cincinnati area, I can't find fault when he writes "CityBeat's annual 'Best Of ...' issue, which emerges in the spring, is a nice capsule guide to the ambience of the town."
