Wynton Marsalis boycotts talking about boycott
Trumpeter WYNTON MARSALIS is performing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra at MIAMI UNIVERSITY on Sunday evening. We might have interviewed him, but his press agent said up front he would not discuss the boycott-inspired cancellation of his show at the Aronoff Center in downtown Cincinnati last year. In fact, we were told he'd immediately end the interview if it came up. Not sure what all the sensitivity was all about, since we thought he canceled the show to make a statement. But we honored his request by not talking to him at all. Unless you're planning to boycott his performance, you can check into tickets: 513-529-3200 ...
The CINCINNATI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and Music Director PAAVO JÅRVI are making a lot of noise these days, what with their March 31 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City and more on tap in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., later in the week. The program includes Erkki-Sven Tüür's Exodus, Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Shostakovich's massive Symphony No. 10. Järvi is quite the media celebrity these days, up and down the Eastern seaboard, where he's been interviewed by The New York Times and The Boston Herald, plus a host of classical radio stations. (It's a good thing he's willing to talk, no matter what the questions.) Don't think for a moment that Järvi's demeanor doesn't make a profound impression about Cincinnati as a city: Add to that the fact that the CSO just announced Järvi's contract has been extended by four years to 2009, and it's further evidence that our arts organizations are a tremendous asset to the city. ...
