Musicians join the anti-war movement with Dissentcinnati

BY MIKE BREEN Linking? Click Here!

Local Bands Say "No War"
A group of some of the top local musical acts in the city have collaborated on a renegade CD project, Dissentcinnati, which will be distributed for free around town at local record stores, restaurants and other retail establishments, as well as at various anti-war rallies and activities. The CDs will be packaged with pertinent information about the anti-war, anti-Bush movement and related local poetry. Those contributing music to the grassroots project so far include Thee Shams, Abiyah, Radiolaria, Haircuts That Hurt, The Spectacular Fantastic, Rockets To Mars, Caruso, The Haywards, Fudgie and Fufu, Chalk, Sistern, Iswhat, Post Haste, Coltrane Motion and The Underwoods. Space on the 80-minute disc was filling up quickly, but, at press time, music was still being accepted (see contact info below).

Anyone wishing to spread the word that not everyone supports the seemingly unavoidable war parade on the horizon can help the cause by burning copies of the CD compilation (or making old-fashioned cassettes) and distributing them to as many people as possible. Artwork (though original anti-war designs are also encouraged) and the downloadable tracks can be found at fudgieandfufu.com.

Those wishing to participate can contact spanglecrotch@hotmail.com for direction or further questions. Master copies of the final project will also be available for those unable to download.

Local Music Is For Lovers
Some Valentine's Day local music fun for the music lover in all of you:

· Friday's multi-band/artist event at the Madison Theater is looking like the best "themed" option for V-Day. Attendees are encouraged to dress up for "A Punk Rock Prom," featuring non-stop entertainment by the best of the local Indie scene, as well as DJ and electronic sets between bands and love poetry from Roesing Ape and David Garza. The bands playing include The Fairmount Girls, The Not, Chalk, Culture Queer, The Wolverton Brothers and Boom Bip, who is slated to perform with his full band. Video artists will provide visuals throughout the night. Filmosound Technic will display 16mm art all evening, while SMF's work synchs up with Culture Queer's sounds, and Boom Bip's set features the videos of Jeremiah. The show starts at 9 p.m. sharp. Admission is $7, or just $12 for a couple.

· Never on Sunday's in Silverton is the site of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre Show. The black-heart procession, featuring local and regional Metal bands, is being presented by "The Metal Attack" radio program on WAIF (88.3 FM). The 18-and-up show gets down and dirty with locals Uncreation, Dominus Obscurum and Estuary, plus Michigan's Sadomachism and the Illinois-based Waco Jesus. For more information, check out www.angelfire.com/music4/metalattack.

· Local singer/songwriter Kim Taylor (winner of the 2002 "Best New Artist" Cincinnati Entertainment Award) is headlining a Valentine's Day show at the Southgate House. Taylor -- who owns the acoustic-music-and-java haven, Pleasant Perk Coffee House -- has had a great start to the new year. In January, she secured a distribution deal with Paste Music and signed a management deal with 7-Sine entertainment, and she's been doing some regional touring for her debut release, So Black So Bright. Friday's show will also feature local Folk great Chris Collier.

· Self-described "Heavy Rock" trio, Kubotah, are playing one of their first shows at Northside's Comet on Friday, opening for local scorchers Rat Fuel. The band features Daniel Sol on bass, vocals and flute (yeah!), guitarist Brian "Fuzz" Holubetz and drummer Robert Wright. The band says their sound is hard and heavy, but "sonically complimented with extended psychedelic tribal jams."

And Then ...
· Locals Echo Park and Scallywagon are playing in a rather unusual setting this week. On Saturday, the bands perform at Perfect North Slopes in Lawrencburg, Ind., starting at 6 p.m. The groups will be the entertainment during the Freezing Point Big Air Competition, an X Games-styled national ski contest. In other ski-music news, the song "Bubble Gum Bandit," by local faves Buckra is currently being used in a Perfect North television commercial.

· This month's MidPoint Music Festival showcase (featuring bands that participated in the wildly successful MidPoint conference last fall) goes down Saturday at The Cavern in Downtown Cincy. The show will feature Columbus Roots-Rock crew, The X-Rated Cowboys, and locals Pike 27 and The Underwoods (who are at work on their full-length debut). MidPoint festival organizers have started accepting online artist registration for this year's event. Go to midpointmusicfestival.com for instructions.
