Northern Kentucky high school writers get published

BY BRANDON BRADY

A new year calls for new authors. Or at the very least, the changing of the calendar offers a glimpse into what the future holds. Such is the case with the booklet, NORTHERN KENTUCKY AREA HIGH SCHOOL CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST WINNERS 2002. The title might be a mouthful, but the entries are wonderfully brief and bring a welcome glimpse into the minds and talents of high schoolers. Granted, it's sometimes hard to fathom what adults have in common with teen-agers, but in truth we were all there once. And the ideas and the language pervading the winning entries in poetry, fiction and personal essay ring true, no matter the age of the reader. Copies of the booklet aren't easy to come by, but maybe NKU's Department of Literature and Language, which sponsored and created the collection, will make next year's edition more readily accessible to the public. Speaking of which, NKU is already seeking entries to the 2003 contest, which is open to all Northern Kentucky high school students. Deadline for entries is April 1, 2003. For contest guidelines, call 859-572-5416. ...

Whenever Dick Clark rocks in the new year, it becomes a bit easier to stomach change. That means poetry junkies must wait a whole week to get their fix. Thanks to New Year's Day (dang that Rose Bowl!), the hip program READINGS ON MAIN has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. The locale (Main City Bar) remains the same. Folks 21 and over are invited to bring themselves, their friends and their creative output for an evening of enlightening poetic insights. 513-241-6111.
