The Bloodthirsty Lovers is the new project from prolific Memphis-based singer/songwriter, David Shouse, best known as the leader of both The Grifters and Those Bastard Souls. The Lovers' self-titled debut release, due in February on Frenchkiss Records, shows off the more ethereal side of Shouse's songwriting, largely eschewing guitars and other Rock Band trappings in favor of a more spacious soundscape of synths and drum machines. Shouse does a superb job making the technology sound warm, wrapping his soulful, psychedelic-tinged Pop songs around them with loving care. While there are elements of Dance music and a few Hip Hop beats, Shouse's songwriting is still the focus, exhibiting grabbing melodies and an almost haunted vocal approach that makes the project as memorable as anything he has done with his other bands. It should be interesting to see how Shouse pulls off the album's crucial dynamics in a live setting.
With Dorsie and The Natural History on Tuesday at the Southgate House.
