Linton Music Series celebrates 25 years

BY RICK PENDER

Martin Short

Twenty-five years ago it was simply a few musicians playing a single recital in a church on Linton Street. A quarter-century later the LINTON MUSIC SERIES has a long-standing tradition of presenting remarkable chamber music in inspiring settings. Such is the case on the afternoon of Oct. 14 -- still at the First Unitarian Church (536 Linton St., Avondale) -- when Cincinnati Symphony concertmaster TIMOTHY LEES pairs with CSO clarinetist ANTHONY MCGILL. Tickets are often tougher to get than seats at Ohio Stadium, but you can inquire about subscriptions (six concerts, October-April). Linton offers a second series, called ENCORE! LINTON at Congregations Ohav Shalom (8100 Cornell Road, Montgomery) which has a larger seating capacity than the intimate church in Avondale. These programs are promoted as "magical" -- and that's what they are, in my experience. You're close to the musicians, you see them working together, and you witness their passion for their music. Info: www.lintonmusic.org. ...

After you've worked with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Kermit the Frog, what's left? In the case of MARTIN SHORT, it could be the CINCINNATI POPS ORCHESTRA. You might think of the former SCTV and SNL star as a comic, but he sings and dances, too -- he won a Tony Award in 1999 for his work on Broadway in Little Me. For Sunday's gig, Short's Ed Grimley will narrate an uproarious rendition of Peter and the Wolf. Tickets 513-381-3300. ...

If Jazz is your thing, you'll find great performances at UC's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). On Oct. 13, a group of CCM faculty will show their stuff in a free 7 p.m. program at Patricia Corbett Theatre: Among the talent will be RICK VAN MATRE, saxophone, PHIL DEGREG, piano, and JOHN VON OHLEN, drums. ... If you need an opera fix this fall, head to Middletown for a production of LA BOHÈME by the SORG OPERA COMPANY on Oct. 11-12. Puccini's popular and romantic work will be presented in Middletown's Sorg Opera House, a 700-seat hall designed by Samuel Hanna-ford, the same guy who dreamed up Music Hall here in Cincinnati. Tickets: 513-425-0180 or www.sorgopera.org.
