Fall Dance Preview

BY KATHY VALIN

Seems like every fall brings even more dance to Cincinnati. Wrap up the summer watching BI-OKOTO DRUM & DANCE THEATRE AND SCHOOL OF AFRICAN CULTURES in "Ba Ni Wojo" ("Come Dance With Me") at the Carnegie Center of Columbia-Tusculum (3738 Eastern Ave., East End) on Friday-Saturday. . . .

On Sept. 13--14 catch NEXT GENERATION DANCE COMPANY (last seen in the charming Pinocchio) in Daryl Bjoza's Jungle Book at the Jarson-Kaplan Theater at the Aronoff Center (650 Walnut St., Downtown). . . .

CONTEMPORARY DANCE THEATER's Guest Artist Season (the 30th for this popular and resilient presenter headed by Artistic Director Jefferson James) kicks off Sept. 26--27 at the Aronoff Center's Jarson-Kaplan with mesmerizing butoh-style movement in Maureen Fleming's "Decay of the Angel" (including dance majors from the University of Cincinnati). Collaborators include videographer Jeff Bush, light designer Chris Odo and photographer Lois Greenfield. Tickets: 513-241-7469. A related exhibit of Greenfield's photos will be at UC's Design, Art, Architecture and Planning Gallery in September. . . .

Again at the Jarson-Kaplan you can experience the cacophony of modern life and a Celtic legend in new choreography (Oct. 1, 4--5) from ALEXEI KREMNEV (recently named associate artistic director of BALLETTECH OHIO PERFORMING ARTS ASSOCIATION's and CLAUDIA RUDOLF BARRETT. Tickets: 513-241-7469. . . .

CINCINNATI BALLET headed by VICTORIA MORGAN leaps boldly into its fortieth year Oct. 18--19 (they perform at the Procter & Gamble Hall at the Aronoff Center) with an historic tribute to Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and legendary Fredric Franklin. He's been in Cincinnati recently, coaching dancers for this gala event, sessions recorded by the Balanchine Foundation. The program will offer excerpts from Gaité Parisienne (Massenet/ Offenbach), among others, and a full-length La Sonnambula (Balanchine/ Riete) plus a world premiere from Julia Adam and related local exhibits. In November, the company presents Kirk Peterson's full-length Sleeping Beauty. Info: 513-621-5282 or www.cincinnatiballet.com). . . .

After a disappointing cancellation last spring, Cincinnati finally gets to see the athletic moves of famed PILOBOLUS DANCE THEATER (presented by Contemporary Dance Theater) on Nov. 19--20 at 7:30 p.m. The mid-week event was necessitated so the group, often booked years in advance, to squeeze us in. This one could be a sell-out. It's another treat at the Aronoff's dance-friendly Jarson-Kaplan, where there's really not a bad seat in the house.
