Down home tunes from a symphony orchestra?

BY RICK PENDER

Well, kind of: 25 members of the KENTUCKY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA make up the KSO BOOGIE BAND, and with eight soloists, they'll present "Thank God, I'm a Country Boy" at Devou Park Amphitheater in Covington on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The evening has 50 Country classics, from Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline to Alan Jackson and the Dixie Chicks. According to the evening's publicity, "The KSO Boogie Band is not a pops orchestra, it's a live juke box." Info: 859-431-6216. ...

Violinist YANG LIU, an Artist Diploma student and Starling Fellow at UC's College-Conservatory of Music, was chosen as one of eight finalists in the prestigious 2002 International Tchaikovsky Violin Competition in Moscow. The competition is held every four years. The finals were June 19-24, and Liu, who finished sixth, was named a Laureate. ...

He plays the tuba and composes: STEVE WINTEREGG, a member of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra for 15 years, has won first prize in the International Trumpet Guild's composition contest. His work for trumpet, "Eastwind Variations," gets its premiere in Manchester, England, this month. No word as to whether Winteregg will next transpose the work so he can toot it on his tuba in Dayton. In the meantime, several of his horny brethren -- The Canadian Brass -- will play at Dayton's Fraze Pavilion on July 20. ...

Typically the animals you'll encounter at Riverbend (at least when Jimmy Buffett isn't performing) are of the simple type -- a frog, a mosquito. But on July 19--20 when the CINCINNATI POPS presents the 15th edition of SYMPHANTASY, they'll be a tad more exotic: Bengal tigers, cheetahs and others from the Cincinnati Zoo. The program includes Saint-Sans' Carnival of the Animals, narrated by the Zoo's Thane Maynard. It's a family-oriented program, complete with "animal encounters" beginning at 7 p.m.; concerts are at 8 p.m. Tickets 513-381-3300. ...

For your information, since late May, it's been possible to get your Cincinnati Symphony tickets from the CSO's re-designed Web site, www.cincinnatisymphony.org. The "live ticketing" feature has resulted in a 50-percent increase in ticket sales via the Internet.
