When two deft defiers hook up to trade beats, rhymes and riffs, we're in for a master class. On May 22 there will be two chances to witness Hamid Drake and Napoleon Maddox in performance and to hear what they will beat out of one another. Drake is a master drummer/percussionist whose study of the drum has taken him into Eastern, Caribbean, African, Indian and Free Jazz forays playing with the late Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Sister Carol and William Parker, among countless others. Maddox is the spitting and sputtering wordsmith/beat box impresario and one-third of the CEA Award-winning IsWhat? Maddox, who seems infinitely fearless in his collaborations with Jazz, Hip Hop and spoken word artists, steps away from his group to expand our eardrums in this sonic experiment with Drake Together, they're a rhythmic clash of the Titans. Lucky us.
Wednesday at the Cincinnati Art Museum (5:30 p.m.) and Top Cat's (9 p.m.).
