Howlin' Maggie
|
Well, it seems like every two months or so we're talking about a band getting dropped from their Big-Time Record Deal and rebounding with some of the most impressive music of their career. This time, it's Howlin' Maggie, the Columbus-based outfit led by ex-Royal Crescent Mob bassist and regular contributor to Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers project, Harold "Happy" Chichester. Howlin' Maggie (also appearing at Shake It Records before the main gig) released the magnificent Honeysuckle Strange album in 1996 on Columbia Records, but lost the deal and now are proudly independent, self-releasing the brand new Hyde. The new release projects the same arching melodies and classic Rock &Roll influences that Honeysuckle reveled in, but there is a nice eclecticism and relative looseness that one might assume comes from Chichester and Co.'s freedom from corporate influence. Hyde mixes achingly beautiful balladry ("If I Could Murder the Right Man" and "Is It Really Right?") with impervious Pop/Rock ("Love Is All Around x 4") and some of the fun, groovy jams that Chichester seemed to have slightly shied away from following the RC Mob's split, including the sing-along, call-to-arms "Where My Funky People."
Saturday at the Southgate House with the Fairmount Girls and Promenade. -- M.B.
