For 33 years, STEWART GOLDMAN taught classes at the ART ACADEMY OF CINCINNATI. At 2 p.m. Sunday, he'll present a slide lecture, "Marking Time," at the auditorium at the CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM (CAM), followed by an opening reception in the CHIDLAW GALLERY (Eden Park, adjacent to CAM), where an exhibition of his recent work is on display. Info: 513-977-4165.
...Artist PEYTON MORRIS PETTY considers herself a painter of stories. "I paint stories about people in my life, or people I encounter," says Petty, who operates the newly opened ESSEX STUDIOS (490 E. McMillan, Walnut Hills). Petty currently has two series on display at the Essex. The first, "Black Out These Lines: Stories of the Religious Right," is based on true stories from her years in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The second, "Joe Pillowman, the Elusive Street Vendor of Peebles Corner," was inspired by the April riots. Essex Studios will be offering a HOLIDAY SALE on Saturday, noon-5 p.m., with art for gift giving by 12 area artists. Info: 513-379-1284.
... ELLEN PRICE has taught printmaking at Miami University for 15 years. Unlike some artists, Price chooses printmaking for the effects she can achieve, not mass-duplication. A series of drypoints exploring plant forms as metaphors for family, life and isolation is on display at SUZANNA TERRILL GALLERY (1315 Main Street, Over-the-Rhine) through Dec. 31. The pieces are serene, earthy and pulsing with life. The exhibit, Friends' Small Works, also features pieces by LEROY PORTER, THOM SHAW and JOYCE YOUNG. Hours: Wednesday-Sunday 1-6 p.m. Info: 513-665-4500. While you're in the neighborhood, check out the new TOM WEAST exhibit at DESIGNSMITH GALLERY (1342 Main St., Over-the-Rhine), through Jan. 19. The small show of flower and leaf studies has mainstream appeal. Hours: Friday-Saturday noon-6 p.m., or by appointment. Info: 513-421-1397.
... Appalachia comes to Cincinnati with IMAGES OF APPALACHIA, an exhibition of the works of Jeff Chapman-Crane on view through Jan. 12 at CLOSSON'S GALLERY (401 Race St., Downtown). The opening celebration was anything but stuffy with live Bluegrass music, lively conversation and real Appalachian cooking. Chapman-Crane is a tall, lanky Kentuckian with an unassuming presence who captures the truest essence of his subjects. I overheard gallery-goers compare his style to Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper. Part of the exhibit is a portrait of Closson's own ANNIE BOLLING, who remarked, "It's a really different show from what most people expect from Closson's." Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Info: 513-762-5532.
...Have you had a chance to stop by the Contemporary Art Center (115 E. Fifth St., downtown) for EN CADA BARRIO REVOLUCION, an exhibit of works by Cuban artists, on display through Jan. 13? You'll see new works by RAÚL CORDERO, FERNANDO RODRÍGUEZ, LUÍS GOMEZ, ELSA MORA, and JOSÉ TORIAC. Bringing the artists to Cincinnati, curator SUE SPAID told me, "was a process, and we had to learn as we went along." The resulting show is exciting and full of energy. Admission: $3.50; $2 students, seniors and veterans. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday noon-5 p.m.
... Need help getting into the holiday spirit? The International Créche Exhibit at GRAILVILLE (932 O'Bannonville Road, Loveland) features over 40 crèche sets from cultures around the world, throug Jan. 6. I was struck by how each Nativity shows strong cultural influences from its country of origin, but some context would have been helpful. Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. To learn about the crèches on display, you must attend one of three presentations on Friday, or Dec. 12 or 18. For $12 you get lunch plus a seminar on the origin of the sets in the collection. Reservations: 513-683-2340.
