Cincinnati Music Week Continues
The first annual Cincinnati Music Week, which began Tuesday night with a huge multi-venue affair in Over-the-Rhine, is off to an incredible start. OK, we're passing this info on to you on Tuesday afternoon, but we're sure things are going swimmingly. The fun continues through Sunday, so be sure to come out and show your support for the local music community.

Thursday's showcases (featuring many of the nominees from various categories in the upcoming Cincinnati Entertainment Awards) take place throughout the Clifton area. The Punk showcase is at Buzz Coffeeshop; Rock nominees are at Top Cat's; The Mad Frog hosts the World/Reggae noms; and Cody's Café will offer the four artists nominated in the Singer/Songwriter category. For a schedule of performances, check www.citybeat.com/musicweek/november6-10.html.

On Friday night at the Southgate House in Newport, CMW welcomes nominees from the Best New Artists CEA category. Nominees Tonefarmer, Gravy8 and Vegas In Space will be joined by fellow newcomers Semi-Automatic, Deltoro, Snake Punching Contest and Crazy Chester.

Saturday night, it's the fourth annual Popopolis music festival at the Southgate House at 8 p.m. This year, the annual event, which has featured local, regional and national Pop/Rock bands, will be headlined by Brooklyn's Nada Surf. Local artists Clabbergirl, Crosley, Gravy 8, Promenade, Rockets to Mars, Saving Ray, The Stapletons, and The Tigerlilies will be split between the 'Gate's ballroom and parlor, while acoustic artists Messerly & Ewing, Swarthy, Hyde Park Outrage, Jason Arbenz, Jason Wells, Mike Landis, Greg Mahan and others will perform between acts in the ballroom and the lounge. New this year is a companion compilation CD from Colonial House Records (colonialhousemusic.com). The disc features artists who have performed at the event in the past and also artists from this year's concert. Look for cuts from Rob Fetters, The Tigerlilies, The Simpletons, and many others. For more on Popopolis, check popopolis.org.

Cincinnati Music Week comes to an end on Sunday, with a free panel discussion at the York Street Café at 6:30 p.m. "Avoiding the Great Rock & Roll Swindle" is designed to help local musicians learn how to get the most out of their CD releases and will feature local music biz reps Darren Blase (Shake It Records), Jim Bosken (QCA), Doug Staab (ICB Audio and Backstage Studios), Keri Valmassei (Nettwerk America), moderator Dave Davis (QCA) and your Spill It host, Mike Breen. The panel/workshop is being presented by Cincinnati Area Performing and Recording Artists Association (CAPRAA), a coalition striving to assist and promote the local music scene. (Elizabeth Russell and Jennifer Shepherd will perform at York Street after the CAPRAA event.)

Like the CEA program itself, all of the proceeds from Cincinnati Music Week will go to Lonely Instruments for Needy Kids (LINKS). The LINKS program is set up to secure and refurbish used instruments for school kids who wouldn't be able to buy or rent them normally. Starting Monday and running through Nov. 16, there will be an "Instrument Drive" for LINKS. If you have old instruments that you have no use for, drop them off at any of the Buddy Roger's Music locations or the Fox 19 studios (635 W. Seventh St., Downtown).

Rumors, Lies and General Misunderstandings
· Local Indie Rock band Sistern has reformed for a show on Thursday at the Southgate House. The band will release a full-length album on Royal Fuzz (royalfuzz.com), an online label based in Atlanta and run by former Cincinnatian Steve Libbey. Also on the bill Thursday is Enon, a Brooklyn-based group fronted by John Schmersal, the former guitarist for Dayton's Brainiac.

· Two big "local" act concerts have been announced for the Taft Theatre in early December. On Dec. 7, Over the Rhine will host their annual Christmas Concert at the Taft. This year, Buddy and Julie Miller and Erin McKeown will open the show. Then, on Dec. 9, neo-Cincinnatian Peter Frampton heads up a benefit concert dubbed "Cincinnati U.S.A. for Relief." The show is also slated to feature appearances by Blessid Union of Souls and 98 Degrees. Proceeds will go to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. Tickets for both shows go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.com or 513-562-4949).
