Those flashy Belle Époque posters, à la Toulouse-Lautrec's blaring Moulin Rouge ads and Mucha's Art Nouveau style, are up and running at the CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM. These began as very commercial, public venue graphic designs, but good art easily casts off its humble beginnings when time lends a closer examination. A free lecture by Jack Rennert on "Toulouse-Lautrec and Mucha: Polar Pioneers of Posters" will be offered in the museum's auditorium on Oct. 27 at 7:30. Rennert will provide an opportunity to know more about the art and the era.
After your next day out to view the fiery fall plumage, stop by the main branch of the Cincinnati Public Library downtown for a glimpse of "Steamboats and Landings Along America's Inland Rivers" by JOHN STOBART. Colorful reproductions of his original works have been collected by the library since 1977. Did you know the Leicester, England, born artist is a product of the Royal Academy Schools? Yep, spent five years studying there and painted the scenes of the Thames River in his youth, the start of his love affair with boats.
This bulletin just in for tomorrow's art stars: Applications are being accepted from high school students for the Yeck High School Junior Fellowship program at the DAYTON ART INSTITUTE. Twelve students will be selected to work with Yeck College Artist Fellowship recipients on projects relating to the Go Figure! Exploring the Human Body in Art display at the Institute. Teachers' recommendations are not required. Submissions will be decided from portfolios and brief statements by the artists explaining their goals. Deadline: Nov. 30. Info: 937-223-5277, ext. 335. If you're in Dayton, check out the Institute's current exhibition, 50 Years of Polaroid Photography, 1947-1997. Among 80 photos shown -- good enough to be art -- are some famous clickers, including Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, Ansel Adams and Barbara Kasten. Through Dec. 9.
Even if the opening reception has passed, there's a must-see installation at the Warsaw Project Space. TONY BATCHELOR, ever the artist of humanity's higher levels, creates All in One. Drop by on Saturdays, Noon-2 p.m., or call 513-652-2349 for an appointment.
JACK MEANWELL's recent contemporary art outshines the sunlight in Christ Church Cathedral, downtown. Take in the 40 to 50 paintings on display and meet the artist at an opening reception on Oct. 21, immediately following Evensong services at 5 p.m. This most likeable artist makes the most likeable art. On display through Nov. 30. Info: 513-621-1817.
