Quasi

While only a duo, Quasi's latest release, The Sword of God (Touch and Go), has a full, warm and fuzzy feel, with their majestic (and occasionally fractured) melodic grandeur filling out the space between the lush ornamentation and organic orchestration. Quasi consists of Sam Coomes (who has played with Elliott Smith and Built to Spill, two mild indicators of the duo's own sound) and Janet Weiss (drummer for Sleater/Kinney), a divorced couple who more than prove they can still make beautiful music together. Sword, the duo's fifth album, follows the band's tradition of making a sound that musically and melodically often exudes joy (save a few intent minor-key musings), though the lyrics are often imposingly downtrodden. But Quasi, like The Beatles did on some of the White Album, makes the artful juxtaposition incredibly soulful and a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
