The "Frigid Niceties" served by the Italian owner of a Parisian coffeehouse in the 1660s are said to have paved the way for ice cream's worldwide popularity today. Each year, we individually consume, on the average, over four gallons of ice cream and frozen yogurt. Despite its wide availability, ice cream, more than any other dessert, connotes instant happiness and continues to be a treat -- inspiring family outings, celebrating Little League wins and launching many a flirtation.
When I'm asked what my favorite dessert is, I answer "ice cream" unequivocally. Whether a trip to the Creamy Whip for a small twister cone or entertaining friends for dinner, ice cream is my choice for dessert throughout the summer months. Here are some of my favorite ways to eat ice cream -- readily available (Graeter's, Aglamesis, UDF, Haagen Dazs), elegant in their simplicity and luscious of flavor.
· Sweetened strawberries over vanilla bean ice cream and pound cake.
· Thick slices of Georgia peaches marinated in bourbon (plus a little sugar) over pecan ice cream and topped with a dollop of whipped cream.
· A scoop of tangerine sorbet or orange Cream-sicle ice cream atop a slice of warm blackberry pie.
· Peach ice cream with blueberry sauce over a sliced buttermilk biscuit.
· Warm apple pie topped with caramel or cinnamon ice cream and toasted pecans.
· Chilled melon balls marinated in plum wine with lime sherbet.
· Rum raisin ice cream with sliced bananas and coconut cookies.
· Crisp gingersnaps with lemon gelato.
Frigid niceties indeed.
