Men share what keeps them going
By Rick Pender
For CityBeat's annual men's issue, we asked a simple question: What do men believe in? What keeps men going? What makes them stop short? What do they make time for? What's central to their day-to-day existence?
Our inquiry covers a lot of territory, and this issue offers responses from all points of the compass. We meet several men from Greater Cincinnati who are acting on their beliefs to make a difference: Darrick Dansby helps people living with debt learn how to handle their money. Chris Frutkin is turning his beliefs in history and Over-the-Rhine into tangible realities by making places for people to live. We meet Russell Smith, who finds truth at the core of belief. Smith is helping others with their beliefs as the new, young -- he's 29 -- pastor at Covenant-First Presbyterian Church on Elm Street in downtown Cincinnati. And there's Brian Joiner, an artist who's found ways to weave belief into the paintings he creates.
Columnist Eric Hunter tells us how his beliefs have evolved from the idealism of a young adult to the more pragmatic position of a many in his 30s.
News Editor Greg Flannery talks about how a simple message when he was a teen-ager gave his life a much-needed perspective, and how that lesson continues to resonate in his life.
Finally, Mike Breen checks in with a few guys who make music about when they came to believe in themselves as musicians. And elsewhere in this issue (page 61), I talk with Philip Thompson who retired from one career to discover a new passion for something completely different: the writings of James Joyce.
This is by no means a comprehensive set of responses: But the perspectives we're sharing shows how many different directions men's passions can carry them.
