Artists, exhibits, etc.
By Fran Watson
Every summer, art thoughts turn to crafts. It must be something in the water. The Hiestand Gallery on Miami University's campus offers an extra plus, though. In addition to its CRAFTSUMMER FACULTY EXHIBITION, June11-July 20, author and quilt maker, JOEN WOLFROM, from Fox Island, Wash., will encourage creativity with a public presentation, "Who Says You Don't Have a Right Side to Your Brain?" Craftsummer is a five-week program of arts and crafts workshops, and daily lunch hour lectures are open to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. ... The Hiestand Gallery also offers "Insectlopedia," an installation of artist books by DIANE STEMPER and "Insect Art" by former Miami students during June. While bugs might not be your favorite animals, a lot depends on how they're displayed. Stemper, one of the artists included in the recent Cincinnati Public Library show of artists' books, makes everything a page-turner. Info: 513-529-7395.
Art from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Next month the Cincinnati Art Museum is offering a lecture by THOMAS HOVING, former director of New York's Metropolitan Art Museum, author and connoisseur extraordinaire, will speak at the fifth annual Benesse Lecture, July 19 at 7:30. "Great Patrons, Lovers and Connoisseurs of Art" promises a peek into who these people are and how they got that way. This is your heads-up: Reservations are required and a sell-out is likely. ($5, members and college students; $10 general public.) Info: 513-721-2787.
We tend to forget one of the most important functions of our Cincinnati Art Museum: that of preserving and collecting, not just catching traveling shows as they zoom by from coast to coast. That's what makes TREASURES FOR A QUEEN: A MILLENNIUM GIFT TO CINCINNATI a must-see summer event. Opening June 16, the show promises "superb quality" in an unprecedented collection of works which might be gifts, promised gifts or bequests to the museum. Angels from St. Peter in Chains, international couturier costumes and Rookwood pottery are all there, along with a soupçon of Picasso, Whistler and Warhol. Info: 513-529-7395.
Gender and Bones -- paintings by LISA SCHARE and bone sculpture by JAN KNOOP -- marks an upward curve lately in shows being presented in the University of Cincinnati Medical Library. Curator Jane Thompson has been bringing in some really nice shows (like this one), deserving of a trip to the campus. It kicks off with an artists' reception on June 22, 4-6 p.m. and runs through July 13. Easy parking in the garage next door. Info: 513-558-5627.
