SOUTHGATE HOUSE (PARLOUR) -- Imagine crossbreeding a 4AD-styled ethereal band with a quiet back-porch Folk group and you'll have a basic idea of what Louisville-based duo Retsin sound like. On the band's latest, Cabin in the Woods (Carrot Top), the duo of Tara Jane O'Neil (Rodan, The Sonora Pine) and Cynthia Nelson (Ruby Falls) completely abandoned the idea of a full band approach and instead concentrated on re-creating the hushed, organic sound of essentially just the two of them, something they came upon while touring as a two-piece. The results make for some mystifying sounds, with Neil and Nelson's made-for-each-other vocals hauntingly interplaying with each other and creating gorgeous harmonies. The slow pace and soft acoustic plunk give the songs a sweeping yet grounded feel which balance wonderfully with the mesmerizing vocals. Retsin play Appalachian music, but they add such an original twist to it that it's easy to imagine it appealing to both hardcore Folk lovers and fans of the Indie Rock "Slow Core" sound. With Michael Hurley. Indie/ Acoustic. Cover.

STANLEY'S -- While there is hardly such a thing as typical in the "Jam Band" universe, one usually wouldn't consider a two-piece "group" when that genre is being discussed. But that's just what the duo Dexter Grove is. Playing acoustically with just guitar and percussion, DG actually manage to sound pretty full on their current release, True. Relix magazine called the band -- who mix various Folk and Rock styles -- "the biggest sounding little band out there" and they are indeed the only duo listed in the Jam bible Jambands. The group's constant touring and growing fan base have helped them nail down opening slots with artists like The String Cheese Incident, Merle Saunders and the like-minded acoustic group Strangefolk. Cover.
SUDSY MALONE'S -- The Banned and Spittle. Rock. Cover.
VOODOO LOUNGE -- Open Blues jam. Free.
