By Rick Pender

The season opener is two months off, but the CINCINNATI SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL (CSF) is already juggling the shows it will stage. AS YOU LIKE IT, a familiar title (CCM's drama program did an excellent rendition of it in 1999, and CSF -- in its earlier incarnation as The Fahrenheit Theatre Company staged the show in late 1996 at Covington's Carnegie Center), has usurped the seldom-produced Pericles, Prince of Tyre, a show that probably wouldn't have had a lot of marquee appeal. The rearrangement has also resulted in some date changes: The regional premiere of Amy Freed's comedy of Shakespearean identity, The Beard of Avon, has been pushed back to the May 16-June 2, 2002, slot that Pericles had; and As You Like It will play April 11-May 5, 2002. For season tickets, call 513-381-2282 or check out www.cincyshakes.com for more info. ... There's a whole lotta bakin' goin' on. THE BAKER'S WIFE, Stephen Schwartz's 1976 musical about a middle-aged baker who loses his wife to a young cad, is one hot commodity right now. The Showbiz Players, a community theater group, are staging it at the St. Ignatius Community Center through June 16 (tickets: 513-471-2580). And if you really like it, you can head down to the Showboat Majestic as of June 13 for another production of this fable of love, loss and renewal, which runs through July 1. ... STEEL MAGNOLIAS, a 1987 play and a 1989 film, is being staged by the Human Race Theatre Company through Sunday at Dayton's Victoria Theatre. Of interest to local theater fans are performances by two well-known Cincinnati actresses, DALE HODGES as Ouiser and SHERMAN FRACHER as Truvy. See citybeat.com for a review of this production and several others, including HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH at ETC.
