EAST END CAFE -- August Christopher are an emerging Nashville quartet who call their style "Freestyle Rock," because of their propensity for improvising lyrics and melodies during their live shows. But, while you could see how that would appeal to a Jam Rock fanbase, the band's music (at least recorded) has a rootsy, poppy edge to it that is reminiscent of bands like Train and the Counting Crows and it's easy to imagine their sound being a big hit on the radio. At the very least, this show should be a good chance to behold the band's audience-participation-intensive experimentation live, which has helped the band form a tight-knit, fervent fan base. (August Christopher also perform Saturday at the East End Café). Rock. Cover.

SUDSY MALONE'S -- There was a time in the mid-'80s when hot underground bands were popping out of Chicago influenced by that city's noise-and-stab kings like the Jesus Lizard and Big Black at a regular pace, and playing in Cincy-area underground havens like Shorty's and Top Hat. Up-and-coming Chicago band Loraxx would have been right in line with that scene -- their Steve Albini-produced (er, "recorded") album Yellville is a swirl a machine-like rhythms, aggressive, howling vocals (courtesy of singer/yeller Arista Strungys) and angular, slicing guitar riffs. The trio is already well-known in the Chi-town underground, getting press from the city's high-profile dailies and airplay on the city's influential radio stations. The group has also begun to spread it's Aggro-Indie noise across the region, touring regularly and playing shows with like-minded artists like Shellac and L7. With The Line and The Dots. Rock. Cover.
