SOUTHGATE HOUSE (PARLOR) -- Local "World" music purveyors Mohenjo Daro will officially release their new CD, Baksheesh. The trio uses a variety of instruments -- Jim Feist plots swirling tabla rhythms, Brian Gomien's plays flute, dulcimer and the percussive bendir, and Zach Mechlem works it out with guitar, mandolin and banjo, among other tools -- and they play them all exceptionally well. But more impressive than the individual skills is the tight, telepathic lock that the three artists have with each other, something that has to be utterly essential to pull this type of music off this well. Exotic and hypnotic, textural and pure, Baksheesh is a rhythmic tour de force laced with faithful yet creatively combined layers of traditional sounds. Cover.

BARRELHOUSE -- While popular on the jam band circuit, Ominous Seapods are one of those band's that have appeal beyond their hippie dancin' fanbase. The group's most recent release, The Super Man Curse, is an anomaly coming from the jam scene for two reasons. Most importantly, the band doesn't rely on flashy, masturbatory solos, instead focusing on the songs. Secondly, the album actually sounds great, thanks largely to producer Glenn Rosentstein. The band's style has a delectable Southern Rock bent, falling somewhere between the Allmans and the Black Crowes, but takes many off-ramps into Pop, Funk and even a little New Wave along the way. Groovy stuff without all the granola aftertaste, the band also pulls it off live, where their occassionally goofy stage presence is mildly Zappa-esque. Rock. $3.
