H SOUTHGATE HOUSE -- Shipping News formed about five years ago when musicians Jeff Mueller (formerly of June of 44 and Rodan) and Jason Noble (also from Rodan and Indie Classical ensemble Rachel's) got together to write music for the NPR show This American Life. Rounded out by drummer Kyle Crabtree, the group's new release, Very soon, and in pleasant company (Touch and Go/Quarterstick) is laced with fluid and textural songs that linger but never meander (as can be the case with some of their peers' sonic explorations). You can hear the roots of Louisville jagged Indie Rock in Shipping News' sound, the languid, wide-eyed syncopation wrought with intent and subtle, dreary passion. With Keynote Speaker, Jim Commonwealth and Mr. Funkyhouse. Indie. Cover.

H SUDSY MALONE'S -- When you get an album called Bikini Pie Fight and see the cover graced by three scantily clad female hotties covered in banana cream, you immediately think you may just have stumbled upon the best girl-group album since The Go-Gos' Vacation. Alas, Seventeen is actually four dudes from Boston with a cheeky sense of humor and a knack for Pop hooks and punky bafoonism. Often compared to Green Day and Queens of the Stone Age, Pie Fight is at its best when the songs supercede the silliness. But you can't help but snicker at tracks like "Mountains, Literally Mountains of Coke" and the Prince-ly "Return to Disco Mountain." All in all, this should be a ridiculously fun show to check out. With Buckra and Mondolux. Rock. Cover.
