DAAPig: A Swine Design is two-faced, but its design and creation are the collaboration of many. Todd Lang, '87 architecture DAAP graduate, and Shawna Haas, '99 fine arts DAAP graduate, represent the multi-faceted lives and nature of the artists.
Lang has worked at Beck Architecture for 14 years, working on the designs for Dewey's Pizza, Carol's on Main and Phyllis at the Madison. He is also part of the DAAP Alumni Governing Board, DAAPig's sponsor. The goal of the Board, he says, is "to get arts out into the community and not be an isolated academic institution."
This pig project was a communal effort, assisted by ArtWorks, who matched Lang with Haas. (Haas was ArtWorks' suggestion for a volunteer painter.)
Haas is just trying to be self-sufficient. Last month, she displayed her figurative paintings in Closson's Work on Paper show. Although she isn't planning another show, she is working on a series of pigeon paintings, which portray how wild life reflects human life. Her current projects also include building a studio in her home to do artwork full-time. She says, "(The pig was) the farthest from any work I've ever done -- stylistically and literally."
