Radiolaria, one of the city's best original Indie bands, is calling it quits with a farewell show this Saturday at the spectacular 20th Century Theater in Oakley. They will be joined by pals The Wolverton Brothers and Chalk, between sets will feature DJs Primadana and Jeremy, and there will be audio/visual presentations by Filmosound Technic.
"Also, I'm nine months along with baby No. 2, so there is always added drama of the possibility of my going into labor at the show," says singer/guitarist/keyboardist Korin Wulkowicz, explaining they chose to play the 20th Century to do something special and unique for the last show.
The band -- which also features Marc Melzer (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Jane Jordan (bass) and Carrie Reynard (drums) -- is splitting now in order to go out on a high-note, with the reality of "real life" becoming harder to balance with band life.
"Between half of us having babies and the other half having 'real' jobs it has gotten harder to tour, harder to practice and harder to write," says Wulkowicz. "All of us are always exhausted for one reason or another, and it seems less realistic for us to weather it all. We decided that it is better to call it quits before we start to dislike each other or start writing complete crap."
The band members still hope to continue playing music in some form. Jordan, the other mom in the group, will continue with The Fairmount Girls, Reynard is looking to start a new band and Melzer will "probably be doing something amazing and mysterious," says Wulkowicz, who herself is still undecided of her musical future as of right now.
As a special so-long gift from Radiolaria, the group will also be giving out a limited-edition CD titled The Last Matinee which, somewhat sadly, is some of the best stuff the band has recorded. The disc features six songs (which may be part of a future post-mortem full-length) and will only be available at the show.
Radiolaria will also keep their Web site (www.radiolaria.com) up and running for the time being.
