Longtime fans of Over the Rhine will no doubt know Bill Mallonee and Vigilantes of Love. But, although the two groups toured together frequently, musically they weren't exactly identical. Though both write sharp melodies (and both are strongly religious, though never didactic), VOL's sound is not ethereal at all, and is more rootsy and gruffer. Mallonee has led VOL through many incarnations and labels, including big-time labels Capricorn and Warner Brothers. His most recent album (number 10 if you're scoring at home), the Buddy Miller-produced Audible Sigh, was self-released. Opening the show is local Country/Rock act Pike 27, featuring members of Holsum, Prospect Hill, Papertown and the Comet Bluegrass All-Stars.

At the Southgate House ballroom on Wednsday.
