New Bands, Demos, EPs and Other Stuff
· MFK, the artists formerly known as My Friend Kevin, are sporting a tasty new CD EP, Sugarilla. The record showcases the band's unique, slanted AltPop sound over six tracks. Angular guitar riffs and memorable Post Punk melodies are MFK's strong point, and they also exhibit a refreshing sense of humor on the EP (why do bands take themselves so seriously anyway). The band's "Medley" is a must-hear for children of the '80s, as the band mesh together Pop Metal hits of that era in their own indelible style.

The group's next show is April 15 at Top Cat's with The Simpletons. You can keep up with the band via their brand new Web site at www.hitlength.com.

· BlueStone Ivory are a band formed by nine Moeller High School grads way back in 1969. The group performed for seven years or so, bringing their tight brand of horn-laden R&B and Rock favorites to the clubs, proms and festivals of Cincinnati with much success. In 1999, the band decided to reunite for their Moeller class reunion. The chemistry kicked in, as their New Year's Eve Live! demo attests, and they haven't slowed down since. Check their Web site now at www.bluestoneivory.com and then on Saturday see them in the flesh as they perform at East End Café.

· Newcomers gravy8 are ready to take on the local scene. An all-too-brief demo reveals this group -- consisting of former members of Birdhouse and Porterhouse ('House bands in the house!) -- to be a superb new Pop trio, featuring sizzling guitar parts and unforgettable melodies. Pop/Rock in Cincinnati has seen some great bands emerge in the past few years and now you can add gravy8 to that list. The group makes its official local debut on Saturday at Top Cat's.

· Another exciting new-ish band in town is Perelandra, a sextet that fuses groovin' Rock and funky, swingin' Jazz into a highly danceable and improv-ready blend. The band features members from various musical backgrounds which lends itself well to the band's eclectic nature (they cover works by artists as disparate as Frank Zappa and Emmylou Harris, if that gives you any idea of where they're coming from). The group is currently planning to record a live-in-the-studio (audience and all) session for a future CD release. You can see Perelandra in action on Saturday at Mt. Lookout Tavern.

Rumors, Lies and General Misunderstandings
· Rocker Mojo Nixon will perform solo acoustic every Wednesday at The Overflow in Over the Rhine. Just don't call it "Mojo unplugged." "With Mojo it's more like 'unglued,' " Nixon says. "Sorta like a wrestling match between Woody Guthrie and Richard Pryor." He plays from 9-11 p.m.

· The Raisins will reunite for a special set at this May's Pepsi Jammin' On Main festival. In conjunction with the event, the band will release Everything and More, originally put out when the band split up in the mid-'80s as a three-cassette set. The re-issue will be in that popular CD format all the kids are raving about, this time as a four-part set. The collection features most everything the band recorded but didn't put on their legendary self-titled debut, including singles and live tracks. The limited edition box set will be officially released May 1. Call 513-871-1500 for details or write Hal Bernard Enterprises, Box 8385, Cincinnati, OH 45208.

· Local Salsa sensations will open for international Latin favorites Cubanismo at Bogart's on Wednesday. Tropicoso goes on stage at 8 p.m.

· Live City Licks, the live local music show on WAIF (88.3 FM) on Saturdays at midnight will feature hard rockers Bloodline 420, transmitted live from the WAIF studios this week.

· Friday night there will be a Planned Parenthood benefit at the Mad Frog in Clifton. Featured musical acts: Sweet Fat, The Kit Kat Club, Perelandra and Steve Gattermeyer.
