Say Cheese
Nothing goes with poetry quite like cheese coneys ... or at least they will for the opening of RIVERBANK POETRY PROJECT's new season. Dennis Kurlas will read poetry from the Beat generation at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton at 7 p.m. Tuesday. As if the poetry isn't enough of a draw, Kurlas will also provide free coneys for those in attendance. Riverbank presents a program once a month. Upcoming events include poet Steve Lansky on Oct. 12: Dana Wildsmith on Nov. 9; poets from Red Crow, an anthology of poetry, on Dec. 14: Appalcahian poet Richard Hague on Jan. 11; George Ella Lyon on Feb. 8; the Second Annual Poetry Slam on March 14; mini-presentations from several published poets from the area on April 11. The season closes on May 9 with readings from student winners of the poetry competition. All programs begin at 7 p.m., but locations vary. For more information, call 863-8873.

Barking Again
Not that local author JEFFREY MARKS has been in the dog house after his last anthology, Canine Crimes, but he has been thrown another bone. He will serve as editor for yet another anthology, Magnolias and Mayhem. Instead of pups, the theme this time centers on locale, as in the Deep South. The first release under Dixieland Mysteries, an imprint of Overmountain Press, will feature stories by Dean James, Margaret Maron, Scott Metz, Virginia Lanier among others. Oh, yeah. Marks will also contribute a story. Look for the trade paperback in June 2000.

Time Bandits
It's that time again to stock up on some books for the chilly months ahead. The MAIN LIBRARY TENT BOOK SALE will be held all weekend in the Main Library parking lot, located at the corner of Ninth and Walnut streets. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
