Literary History

Here's a little known factoid: The Cincinnati Preservation Association (CPA) has a collection of over 1,000 books on Cincinnati history and architecture. Naturally, it's been a very slow process to catalogue all the titles, authors and subjects found within. But the group is making headway, finding out that their collection contains over 100 books that don't fit in whatsoever. What's to be done? How about a RARE BOOK SALE? The big event takes place this weekend with a members-only preview and wine-and-cheese reception Thursday night. The sale opens to the public on Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon, at the CPA office at 342 W. Fourth St. Titles include three volumes of Les Misérables, Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers, Browne's Cincinnati Almanac and Isaac Kelso's Danger in the Dark: A Tale of Intrigue and Priestcraft. So the selection might be a little eclectic. For more information, call 7214506.

Ah, Fair Beatrice
You just can't get more literary or theatrical than the man himself, William Shakespeare. It only makes sense that the August FIRST WEDNESDAY BOOK DISCUSSIONS over at the Mercantile Library will spotlight the Bard's Much Ado About Nothing. Linda Vaccariello, Cincinnati Magazine senior editor, will lead a discussion of the play that just happens to be the first production for the 1999-2000 season at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. The talk takes place at noon, Wednesday, Aug. 4. Reservations available at 6210717.

To Boldly Go
It seems like a strange literary tie-in to us, but who are we to question an upcoming event at Joseph-Beth Booksellers? CELEBRATE TREK & AN EARLY BIRTHDAY FOR GENE RODDENBERRY will feature all Star Trek books at 10 percent off their regular prices. So Roddenberry wasn't an author, but Trekkies are readers, too. Beam us there, Scotty.
